Hurdle rate

Also known as Preferred return

The minimum annual return LPs must earn before the manager takes carry.

Eight percent a year is the common benchmark, compounding. If the fund does not beat it, the GP earns no carry.

Why it matters when you raise
It is a sign of alignment, and LPs notice when a fund has no hurdle at all.
