A Pension Promoted Its Equities Chief to Run Asset Management: How to Write Outreach When an LP Names an Insider to a Bigger Seat
Alecta made its head of equities the permanent head of asset management from 1 November. How to write to an LP after an internal promotion, what to reference, and what to leave out.
When an LP promotes someone from inside, the outreach question is different from a new external hire. Alecta announced on 29 October 2026 that Magnus Tell, its head of equities since 2023, is its permanent head of asset management from 1 November, after serving as interim head since 1 September. The person is not new to the organisation, which changes what a GP should write, when to write it and what not to say. Everything below is our advice, not guidance from Alecta.
What the announcement gives you to work with
Alecta's chief executive, Pablo Bernengo, said it was good to have recruited a head of asset management from within the organisation. He described Tell as experienced in managing all asset classes and in allocating between them, and as someone who developed the equity management in recent years. Tell said Alecta is a major player with an important mission. Before Alecta, Tell was head of equities at the Third Swedish National Pension Fund, and earlier he held roles at ABG Sundal Collier, Deutsche Bank and Arrowgrass Capital Partners. The announcement does not mention private markets, the allocation, or any manager search, and Alecta did not say who will lead equities now. It manages about SEK 1,500 billion for 2.9 million private customers and 37,000 corporate customers, which is about 99% individuals and 1% companies by customer count.
Step one: do not congratulate and pitch in the same message
A promotion note that opens with a fund pitch reads as opportunistic. A short, separate note that acknowledges the appointment, and nothing more, costs little and establishes that you noticed. If you have a genuine reason to write, such as a prior meeting with Alecta's equity team, say so in one line. If you do not, wait.
Step two: reference continuity, not novelty
An internal appointment tells you that the investment function expects to keep working the way it did. Refer to what Alecta has already done, as far as it is public, and avoid language that assumes a new agenda, such as "now that you are setting a fresh direction". The sources give no sign of one.
Step three: speak in portfolio terms
The announcement stresses allocation across asset classes. A GP who writes only about their own fund's returns misses what the reader is likely to care about. State what role the fund plays in a total portfolio, what it complements, and how it has behaved when listed markets fell. Quote the returns you can document and state the period and the denominator, for example the share of realised capital, not only the share of deals.
Step four: use the shared history carefully
Tell's earlier years at AP3 and in London and New York are public. A real link to any of those organisations is a legitimate reason to write, and our guide to warm introductions and the one on warm paths to LPs cover how to ask a mutual contact for an introduction. A claimed link that cannot be checked will cost you the meeting.
Step five: time it
The seat has been Tell's, on an interim basis, since 1 September, so the first week after the permanent start may be busy with handover. A reasonable approach is to send the acknowledgement now and hold any fund-specific message for a few weeks, or until you have something concrete such as a first close or a new track record milestone to report. Check the timing against your own fundraising calendar, not against anything Alecta has said.
How this compares with other LP changes
Not every leadership change calls for the same note. When the Mellon Foundation promoted its deputy, our piece on mapping warm paths when an LP promotes from within argued that the existing relationships matter more than the new title, and the same logic applies here. Timing windows also differ by LP type: our note on what to send an endowment CIO after results are published covers a calendar-driven window, whereas a promotion is a person-driven one. The practical difference is that a results window has a date, while a promotion window closes quietly once the new head has settled into the role.
An illustration of the acknowledgement note
This is an illustration, not a message from or about any real exchange. Subject line: "Congratulations on the permanent appointment". Body: two sentences that congratulate the recipient, state in one clause who you are and why you follow Alecta, and end with a line saying that no reply is needed. Nothing in it mentions a fund, a size or a meeting request. The restraint is the point, because the note is there to be remembered later, when a fund-specific message arrives with something concrete to report.
What to leave out
Leave out claims about what the new head will want, since Alecta has said nothing about it. Leave out speculation about who will run equities. Leave out the size of Alecta's assets as a hook, because they are public and add nothing. Read the news behind this note in our report on the Alecta appointment.
