Anchor investor

Also known as Cornerstone investor

A large early LP whose commitment gives other investors the confidence to follow.

Anchors usually commit before the first close and are often rewarded with lower fees, co-investment rights or a share of the management company's economics. Their name and diligence work act as a signal to the rest of the market.

Why it matters when you raise
One credible anchor can shorten a raise by months. Know what you are prepared to give for it before you start.
